Myopia Control at Optik Kempf

What Actually Is Myopia?

Your Child Is Myopic, What Now?

In a myopic eye, the eyeball has usually grown beyond the target, so simply put, it's just a bit too long. Our current lifestyle (smartphone, tablet, etc.) and our school system (increasingly longer school hours, all-day schools, excessive homework, etc.) increasingly favor this condition. The ever-increasing work, or even play, up close stimulates eye growth more and more so that myopia increases. However, genetics also plays an important role here. If your partner and you are already myopic, the probability that your child will also become myopic is quite high. We recommend early checkups by an ophthalmologist in this case (from 6 months of age)

But What Can You Do About It?

  • Research has shown that sunlight has a positive influence on the eye, so children who spend at least 4 hours outside after homework have up to 50% reduced eye growth - So go out to play :-)
  • Limit time on digital media (smartphone, tablet, console, etc.), the recommendation here is 2 hours daily.

We Can Also Offer You Aids to Slow Eye Growth!

  • Contact lenses specially developed for children (soft or hard contact lenses) which, through their optical design, inhibit growth by up to 40% and are worn during the day
  • Orthokeratology contact lenses (also called DreamLens or OrbiFlex-OK Relax), these reduce growth by up to 50% and are worn exclusively at night while sleeping. Thus, with these lenses, unrestricted romping, playing and learning is possible for your child, because at the same time these lenses also correct refractive errors during the day!

By the way, it's a vision myth that little ones can't handle contact lenses.

Even 5-year-olds often handle the visual aids with ease. The key to success is care by contact lens specialists. They fit the lenses, explain handling and hygiene, and ensure consistent follow-up. Dr. Stefan Bandlitz

Of course, cooperation with your ophthalmologist is also essential here. They should always check your child's eye health at small intervals and can also advise you about further or supplementary treatments such as with atropine drops.

Do you have further questions on the topic or would you simply like to have your child's vision checked? Best to schedule a consultation appointment today.
